Undergraduate Degree

International Year One offers an ideal way for international students to prepare for a successful transition into degree level study. Designed specifically for students who have successfully completed secondary education, the one-year programme assists learners in developing their academic knowledge and English language ability. At the end of the International Year One, students can move onto Year Two of the intended degree, often with advanced standing. This can significantly reduce the total number of study years while allowing greater exposure to new subject areas and/or levels of study. The requirements for entry into an International Year One will vary according to the subject area. Most courses require that the student meets the same admissions standards as non-International Year One entrants, including qualifications in English and other prerequisites. In certain cases, prospective students may also be required to provide evidence of the successful completion of a recognised academic qualification.

Pre-Master & Direct Master

A Pre-Master’s pathway is an attractive option for students who want to continue their studies at a master’s degree level, but didn’t quite meet the entry requirements for a direct master’s program. These programs are designed to prepare students for success in their chosen master’s degree, making sure that they are well-versed in the academic language, specialised subject knowledge and study strategies required for further study.

Typically, a pre-Master’s pathway is structured, often comprising of courses designed to boost knowledge of the chosen subject, while also providing skills that are relevant to studying a master’s. These courses will usually focus on research and formal written and spoken academic language, but some programs may also feature general study approaches, such as time-management, problem-solving and managing stress.

To assess applicants for a pre-Master’s program, universities generally follow the same entry requirements as they would for a direct master’s – though they may be slightly more flexible in the grades they require. Applicants are frequently asked to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language, as well as demonstrate knowledge of the chosen subject and respective skills.

Once accepted, students will enter into a specially tailored program of study, which will help them to acquire the academic know-how and capacity to succeed in the chosen master’s degree. Most pathways are for one year and will split the year into two semesters, with topics covered including in-depth study of research skills, mastery of the English language, and higher-level subject-specific courses, all aimed to prepare students for master-level coursework.

Where previously a student may have lacked the requisite knowledge and skills to pursue their studies at a postgraduate level, a pre-Master’s pathway can provide them with the opportunity to hone the necessary abilities and gain entry onto the master’s program of their choice. In the best-case scenario, by the time they receive the diploma at the end of the pre-master’s program they are then ready to continue on to the master’s program with the appropriate knowledge and abilities required to
